El fitomejoramiento participativo se basa en la idea de que los agricultores poseen conocimientos y habilidades importantes que podrían ser complementarios de los que poseen los fitomejoradores profesionales. El FMP se define, en términos generales, como una serie de métodos en los que participan diversos actores (como científicos, mejoradores, agricultores y otros interesados) en las diferentes etapas del proceso de fitomejoramiento.
