Arılar (Hymenoptera) takımının bal arıları (Apidae) familyasında yer alan, bilimsel adı Apis mellifera olan, işçi arılar 10-15 mm, erkek arılar 15-17 mm, ana arı 18-20 mm boyunda, siyahımsı kahverengi ve sarı renkli, çiçekli bitkilerin döllenmesinde önemli rol oynayan, bal, polen, propolis, balmumu, arı zehiri, arı sütü gibi ürünleri beslenme, sağlık, kozmetik gibi alanlarda kullanılan sosyal yaşayışlı yararlı böcek türü.
