  • Information The generic use of the term “convention” is synonymous with the generic use of the term “treaty” – it can cover all legally binding international agreements. It may also refer to a group of laws apart from international customary rules and general principles of international law.

  • As a specific term, convention is now mainly used for formal multilateral treaties with a broad number of parties, such as the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity. Conventions can also be adopted by an organ of an international organization, such as the General Assembly’s 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child.
