ToBRFV ana konukçuları domates ve biber bitkileri olan yıkıcı bir virüstür. Petunya bitkisi ise virüsün belirtisiz konukçusudur. Yabancı ot türlerinden köpek üzümü ve sirken virüs için hastalık kaynağıdır.

ToBRFV was first described from tomato crops in Israel in 2014. The virus is a tobamovirus, related to Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV). However, the new virus can overcome the Tm-22 resistance gene which means that TMV and ToMV resistant varieties will be susceptible.
