Definition

  • Information Smallholders are small-scale farmers, pastoralists, forest keepers, fishers who manage areas varying from less than one hectare to 10 hectares. Smallholders are characterized by family-focused motives such as favouring the stability of the farm household system, using mainly family labour for production and using part of the produce for family consumption.

Scope note

  • The definition of smallholders differs between countries and between agro-ecological zones. In favourable areas of sub-Saharan Africa with high population densities, they often cultivate less then 1 ha of land, whereas they may cultivate 10 ha or more in semi-arid areas, or manage 10 head of livestock. The terms “smallholder” and “small scale farmers” are sometimes used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the two, as "smallholder" refers more to tenure, while "small-scale producer" or farmer refers more directly to production levels.
